Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Somba Maternity project was officially opened on September 30, 2018, serving a catchment area of seven group villages in Traditional Authority Bwananyambi, Mangochi, as well as people from neighboring Machinga district. Since its inception, the maternity wing has provided essential antenatal, labor, and postnatal care to over 2,029 women. This facility has been instrumental in improving maternal and neonatal health in the community.

  • High rates of maternal and neonatal mortality.
  • Long travel distances for expectant mothers to reach healthcare facilities.
  • High number of home deliveries without skilled medical assistance.

  • The total number of children born at a health facility has risen from 146 to 437.
  • The maternity wing averages 40 admissions per month.
  • Travel distances to receive maternity care have been significantly reduced.
  • A reduction in maternal and neonatal mortality has been achieved.
  • The number of unsafe home deliveries has decreased.
