Project Overview

Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Mikundi Irrigation Scheme, implemented by Mai Aisha Trust with funding from Peace Giving International, was completed in December 2019. Located in Mikundi village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi, Mangochi, the scheme benefits 30 farmers, including 10 men and 20 women. The project introduced the use of concrete canals, allowing for more efficient water management and enabling farmers to cultivate larger plots of land. As a result, the community now grows maize, vegetables, and tomatoes with increased productivity, leading to enhanced food security and economic improvement.

Challenges We Addressed

The problems our community faced before intervention

  • Farmers were using inefficient earth canals to direct water to their crops, which promoted soil erosion.
  • They were unable to cultivate large pieces of land, limiting their crop production.

Our Solutions & Approach

Strategic interventions and methodologies implemented

  • Concrete canals were constructed to improve water management and reduce soil erosion.

  • Soil erosion has been minimized.
  • Irrigation is now easier with the use of concrete canals.
  • The community has achieved greater food security and economic enhancement.
  • Farmers are able to cultivate larger areas of land, resulting in higher yields.
