Project Overview

Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Mandimwi Irrigation Scheme is a 10-hectare, gravity-fed farming project located in the Ntonda Extension Planning Area (EPA), 8km west of Blantyre. Initiated by the community to address food insecurity, the project received funding from Mai Aisha Trust following an approach to the Asian Muslim Relief Aid (AMRA) in 2007. The Ministry of Agriculture and Water Development provided technical partnership for the construction. The local community actively supported the project by contributing locally available resources, including sand, bricks, and quarry stones. Now fully operational, the scheme allows farmers to harvest crops two to three times a year, significantly improving their livelihoods. In addition to crop farming, the scheme incorporates fish farming, which supplements both farm income and nutritional needs.
