Project Overview

Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Mtemaumo Irrigation Scheme is a gravity-fed project located across the villages of Mbande, Mbokola, and Sankwenche in Traditional Authority Somba, Blantyre District. Situated about 25 kilometers from Blantyre City, the site is part of the Ntonda Extension Planning Area. The scheme was designed to be economical, environmentally friendly, and sustainable, utilizing Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) irrigation design standards for its hydraulic structures, pipes, and canals, including a main canal of approximately 350 meters. Farmers, guided by an irrigation agronomist, developed a cropping calendar suitable for the local climate and soil, focusing on maize and vegetables across three growing seasons per year. The Department of Agricultural Extension Services (DAES) provides ongoing advisory support on crop and land husbandry practices to ensure optimal productivity.
