Project Overview

Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Nangalamo Irrigation Scheme project was implemented by Mai Aisha Trust and funded by Drop Of Compassion in September 2019. Situated in Adam village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi Masuku in Mangochi, the three-hectare scheme supports 20 farming families, comprising 8 men and 12 women. Since its inception in 2008, the group had been using primitive irrigation methods. This project provided a modern water pump and concrete canals, replacing inefficient manual techniques. Farmers now cultivate crops like vegetables, maize, and tomatoes with greater efficiency, leading to higher yields and improved livelihoods.

Challenges We Addressed

The problems our community faced before intervention

  • Farmers used pails to carry water for irrigation, a labor-intensive and inefficient method.
  • They frequently had to hire a water pump at a high cost.
  • The use of earth canals resulted in significant water loss and soil erosion.

Our Solutions & Approach

Strategic interventions and methodologies implemented

  • A new, dedicated water pump was provided to the farmers.
  • Concrete canals were constructed to prevent water loss and soil erosion.

Results & Impact

Measurable outcomes and lasting community benefits

  • The new infrastructure allows farmers to cultivate a larger portion of land and produce high yields.
  • The community's lives have been significantly improved.
