Project Overview

Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Kachulu Irrigation Scheme project was implemented by Mai Aisha Trust with funding from Peace Giving International. Completed in December 2019, the scheme is located in Tambala Village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi, Mangochi. It supports 20 farmers, including 5 men and 15 women, who now cultivate crops like maize, vegetables, and tomatoes. The provision of a water pump has replaced inefficient manual irrigation methods, allowing farmers to cultivate larger plots of land, increase their yields, and enhance both their food security and economic standing.

Challenges We Addressed

The problems our community faced before intervention

  • Farmers used pails to manually irrigate crops, limiting the size of land they could cultivate.
  • They sometimes used hired pumps and earth canals, which were costly and promoted soil erosion.
  • These methods resulted in low crop yields and consequently low income.

Our Solutions & Approach

Strategic interventions and methodologies implemented

  • A new water pump was provided for efficient irrigation.
  • The use of modern irrigation techniques replaced inefficient and damaging earth canals.

Results & Impact

  • Irrigation is now significantly easier and more effective.
  • Soil erosion has been reduced.
  • Farmers are now able to cultivate larger plots, leading to higher yields.
  • The community's food security and economic status have been enhanced.
