Project Overview

Detailed description of our project goals and methodology

The Nkumba Nyenyezi Irrigation Scheme was implemented by Mai Aisha Trust with funding from Drop Of Compassion. Located in Issa village, Traditional Authority Bwananyambi Masuku in Mangochi, the 2.5-hectare scheme was completed in September 2019. The project supports 34 farming families, composed of 12 men and 22 women, who now cultivate crops such as vegetables, maize, and tomatoes. The provision of a water pump and concrete canals has made irrigation easier, allowing for the cultivation of larger plots and leading to higher yields, enhanced food security, and economic improvement for the community.

Challenges We Addressed

The problems our community faced before intervention

  • Farmers used pails to irrigate crops manually.
  • They were unable to cultivate large pieces of land.
  • They sometimes had to hire expensive water pumps.
  • The use of earth canals led to water loss and promoted soil erosion.
  • These challenges resulted in low yields and low income.

Our Solutions & Approach

Strategic interventions and methodologies implemented

  • A dedicated water pump and concrete canals were provided for efficient irrigation.

Results & Impact

Measurable outcomes and lasting community benefits
