With financial commitment from brother Ashraf Patel through DOC, Mai Aisha Trust constructed primary school blocks in Mikundi village, T/A Mbwananyambi, Mangochi District. The school is known as Mpenjere Primary School. The constructed structures include two classrooms and one headteacher’s office.
Problems before donor intervention:
- School children had to walk 9 kilometers to and from the nearest primary school
- This contributed to high dropout rates and promoted illiteracy
Challenges after school establishment:
- Pupils learned in temporary, unsafe shelters
- The temporary shelter had only two classrooms, insufficient for the large number of pupils, forcing some to learn under trees
- No headteacher office, requiring the headteacher to work under a tree
How the school block project has improved conditions:
- Pupils now learn in modern, safe classrooms
- The headteacher has a modern, safe office
- The safe environment motivates both pupils and teachers, leading to improved education quality
